Academic Coaching and Mentoring

Les Joynes, PhD is an ICF credentialed professional coach and University of London trained GoldAward Mentor. As part of Dr. Joynes’s research on building platforms to support successful transcultural research, exchange and education he will contribute a special academic leadership pilot series on transcultural coaching offered to students and scholars in the Department of International and Transcultural Studies giving them the opportunity to explore coaching as a space to develop goals and vision. Each session is 50-minutes via Zoom.

Biography: Dr. Les Joynes is a Visiting Research Scholar on International and Transcultural Education, at Teachers College, Columbia University. A member of the Columbia University community since 2009, Les has served MBAs and EMBAs at Columbia Business School, MFAs at Columbia School of the Arts. He initiated doctoral coaching at University of Melbourne in Australia and MBA coaching to California State University. A professional coach credentialed by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) Les serves as an ICF Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Coach Mentor working with other professional coaches to support clients in DEI. Les is initiating coaching-in-management workshops in California and Taiwan.

Les is a member of the Columbia Neuroscience Society and during his MBA studied under Organization Behavior and Development specialist, Dr Abraham Rami Shani, author of Behavioral Change in Organizations (McGraw Hill 2009) and co-published on parallel learning systems. Specialized in organizational management, he has served US Fortune 500 firms: 3M, DuPont, General Electric, General Motors and Dow in developing regional strategyHis research is inspired by recent research on neuroscience of imagination (Lee, Parthasarathi and Kable, 2021) and on how idea generation can be facilitated contextually (Toubia, Bruchs 2019) and how can we bring this further into building environments that encourage creativity to take root and evolve within organizations.

Les has directed Fulbright US Public Diplomacy projects in Mongolia (2014), China (2017), and was recipient of the Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Award for India (2022) and served as Fulbright Senior Scholar at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts and as Fulbright Visiting Associate Professor at Visva Bharati University in West Bengal. As US Department of state sponsored ACMS Fellow, Les led the first research on Mongolian art education and created models to facilitate effective faculty exchange in the region. He has lectured on intercultural exchange at Cambridge University, Columbia University, Columbia Global Center Beijing, Sun Yat-Sen University, Taiwan, Taipei National University of Education, University of Colombo, the University for Visual and Performing Arts, Kelaniya University in Sri Lanka.

Co-publishing in 1990 on transnational collaboration models and parallel learning methodologies and technology transfer. Currently examining models for education exchange between the US and Mongolia.

Creative Education in the 21st Century Curriculum design for MFA and PhD programs that integrate the arts with other disciplines. .
