Les Joynes

A Coaching Journey

I love to help successful people in their professional journeys - working with them to identify what is most important to them and what will activate their lives. I am trained both in management and creativity and together we explore creative approaches to ideating solutions and ways forward. As an executive educator and coach, I help people understand how our beliefs and the environments we operate in can trigger negative behaviors. Through simple and practical advice, I help people achieve and sustain positive behavioral change.

An ICF-credentialed Leadership Coach at Columbia, I bring 35 years of global experience and have served Fortune 500 leaders across Management Consulting, Finance, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Healthcare and Technology, Government, Education, Marketing and the Creative Industries. When I was in college, I took a management course for interpersonal problem-solving which focused on building clear goals and objectives within teams. Later, during my graduate training in management, I discovered how essential coaching skills were, especially within diverse teams. During my MBA at CalPoly, I had the opportunity to study under Organizational Behavior specialist Dr Abraham Rami Shani. Together, Rami and I published on parallel learning models for cross-cultural collaboration and technology transfer. Our research inspired my path to management consulting where I served multinationals including General Motors, 3M, General Electric, Du Pont de Nemours, Dow, Ashland and Bayer on global strategy and competitive intelligence. During my journey in coaching an iconic book for me was John Whitmore’s Coaching for Performance (1992) which has become a staple for coaches around the globe.

In addition to management, I am also trained in the creative fields and completed my training in London and Tokyo. In 2000, I worked with my first coaching client, an entrepreneur in the creative industries, and together we examined what was keeping her from moving forward. We unpacked her goals and ways forward - and within six months she launched a new business focus that was better aligned to her career goals and she became extraordinarily successful - and happy.

I also discovered how creativity is one of the most powerful components in coaching to leaders in any industry. This has led me to initiate coaching labs and pilots at Yale, University of Melbourne and California State University. Since then, I have served future leaders as an entrepreneurship and leadership coach at Columbia Business School, Columbia’s start-up lab, Almaworks, California State University and Parsons School of Design. He is also a GoldAward Mentor at University of London.
